Why do they use Antabuse instead of a regular pill that makes you nauseaus? Its dangerous to drink and take antabuse together, so
Why can't they just give a regualar pill that gives you upset stomach, diarrhea....ect? that is less dangerous

Another med to cause nausea would keep the person from eating anything."

how long after drinking alcohol must I wait to start Antabuse? I have talked w/ my dr in regards to starting a program based on antabuse to stop drinking. I have failed to ask him how long alcohol must be out of my system prior to starting. I read online it could be 12 hrs or a couple of days. Anyone know? Thanks for your time.

Anything available otc that is comparable to antabuse? My husband has finally decided that his drinking is out of control and wants to quit. He however won't go to a doctor so is there anything available that I can buy over the counter that is comparable to antabuse? Thanks!

Antabuse, can I eat chocolate chip cookies with vanilla extract in them? I just started taking Antabuse to stop drinking and my aunt made me some cookies that have vanilla extract in them? I am dying to have one but do not want to suffer the consequences.
TX2step replied: "Usually any alcohol content will have burned out during baking; and there's so little vanilla in the whole batch of cookies, it shouldn't bother you. But, you can call your pharmacist and ask......."
snakegrrl replied: "I believe you can. At least in baked goods. Just don't have it in something that isn't cooked. Like don't put vanilla extract in your coffee, don't put it in your whipped cream if you're making the stuff from scratch. Usually vanilla extract leaves only the flavoring behind when the whatever is baked. Alcohol has a low boiling point, so it cooks out of things quickly. That's why they don't check your ID before you order bread pudding with bourbon sauce for dessert! There's a lot of bourbon in that but all the alcohol cooks off so it's safe even for kids and pregnant women.
But check with your doc. I may be wrong on this. Good luck quitting the drinking! I've heard it's really tough to quit, but have no experience in it or else I'd give more advice....haven't been brave enough to try alcohol outside of cooking yet."
Poyzin replied: "good question. I heard even mouthwash (which you don't swallow) can cause a bad reaction.
Although the temperature and chemical reactions resulting from baking the extract probably renders it harmless, i wouldn't take a chance.
But.. it might also not hurt to do some math.
If she used 1 teaspoon and it's 15% alcohol, you have only 15% of a teaspoon of alcohol in the entire batch of cookies. If a batch of cookies is 20 cookies, it means you only have 0.75% of a teaspon of alcohol per cookie. That's WAY less than a drop. Plus, assume that 50% of it evaporates from the baking process, you have WAY less than half a drop of alcohol per cookie."
How can I speed up the elimination of Antabuse from the body? I have been taking the drug for 9 months.Will diet and excercise and Detox Tea help to in the process?

lizardman replied: "first off why are you on it? is going back to alchohol a good idea? if so drink lots of cranberry juice this helps flush your system of most evrything. throughout the day drink lots of water. this will only help some but will shorten the half life of the drug in you. you only have 4-7 days before you can start drinking alcohol again."
Aaron S replied: "Unfortunately there is really no way to eliminate is any faster than your body will naturally. Diet and exercise will help your body do this, so will drinking plenty of fluids.. Antabuse is one of those sticky drugs in that even if there are trace amounts in your system alcohol can react with it. Remember not to consume any alcohol for at least 2 week after stopping."

How do they administer court ordered antabuse? My father in law got a dwi and may have to take it. He said that they have no way of making sure you take it. I disagree.

He will have to go to a certified drug testing facility (every day), sign in with an ID and they will watch him take it and then sit around for 20 minutes so he can't throw it back up.
They aren't gonna mess around with letting him not show up, let him go early or not take it because they (testing facility personnel) are representatives of the court."
